Sharing/Serving pages to other WiFi users.
In order to serve pages to other clients, who are using computers, an iPhone, iPod touch or other mobile devices that have internet browsers you, and they must be connected to a WiFi network and have valid IP addresses.
Most Cellular providers to do not allow inter-device access, so sharing is only available on WiFi networks.
If the IP address in the Browser Screen at startup time is 127.0.0.1 or the Status Screen shows “No Wi-Fi Network Wiki Unavailable” then WikiServer thinks it does not have access to a WiFi network. Check the device’s Setting application to confirm you are connected to a WiFi network.
If you have set “Public Access” to OFF on the Settings Screen then it will show the IP address as 127.0.0.1 and no external devices can access the Wiki. You must turn the Public Access to ON in order for the Wiki to serve pages to external devices.
It is possible to have a valid IP address, and you can connect to the internet, but there is no inter-device sharing. Some public WiFi networks might block inter-device access to port 8080, if so the Setting Screen will let you pick a different port number such as: 8008, 8081, or 8090.
Unfortunately some public WiFi networks block ALL inter-device connections, there is no way for WikiServer to work around such a restrictive policy, please check with the public WiFi provider regarding their usage policies.
In order for external devices to access the Wiki they must type into their browser the URL as indicated by the Status Screen.
Remember if you are sharing pages and start moving the device you could go outside of the WiFi network coverage area, in this case people accessing your Wiki will not be able to connect and you should at some point see the IP in the Status Screen change from a valid IP to “No Wi-Fi Network Wiki Unavailable” or to some other IP if you transition into another WiFi network. You still will be able to work with the Wiki via the touch screen.
1.4
In version 1.4 you can allow or deny the ability for the public to edit the Wiki via the Settings Screen. This disables the ability for non-device users to edit the Wiki, but the device user can use the Wiki command to edit the Wiki. We note this does not prevent someone from using the import/export feature to export data, or import data. You should delete any import/export page to prevent this from happening.
Using a AdHoc WiFi network from a desktop machine.
Users have told us if you setup a desktop machine WiFi radio to supply an AdHoc network, then on the iPhone or iPod touch connect to that network and configure the device with a static TCP/IP address, then WikiServer will show 127.0.0.1 as the IP address, but you can connect from the desktop machine to the WikiServer using the static IP address you assigned to the device.
Sharing to the Internet?
If a device on your WiFi network is visible to the Internet, then yes you could serve pages to the internet. Normally devices on local WiFi networks are not accessible from the internet, but this depends on how the network is configured.
Sharing on the Cell network?
In our experience inter-device access is not available on cell networks, however your cell phone provider may allow this, if so contact us about a beta version of WikiServer to test this feature.
